FARM LIFE

Great experience is gained from getting involved in the practical aspect of Agriculture, whats the use of your education if it doesn't transform you or solve a problem Working on a farm for 8 months opened my mind to a lot of things, great possibilities and human behavior.

On the farm, the mode of transport is either at the back of a tractor or on a motor-bike. Was first introduced to activities on the farm, from Tree Census i.e counting trees to Production Census i.e projecting the yearly yield and checking for Insects all in the name of Photo- Sanitary inspection.

Later started work as quality control officer, working on all three farms, i.e Oil Palm plantation, Rubber Plantation and Citrus Farm.

Supervising and Providing monthly reports on farm activities.

Recommendations on how to improve farm activities were noted in the monthly reports. It was noted how poorly wages were given to labour used on the farm. These are mostly the hands that do most of the work on the farm to ensure all year round production, profit and keep the Company running, but were paid not-enough-money for their input.

A major problem was the growth of weeds on the farm. a Weed is simply a plant growing where it is not wanted, Cassava growing on a Cocoa farm makes it a weed. Weeds are Controlled both manually and chemically on the farm.  Manual weed control requires a lot of strength and endurance to complete ones daily task. Chemical control being quite easy on the other hand poses other health risks to the applicator.

In their quest to get enough energy to complete their daily tasks, some of the labourers result to the use of Herbal medication for energy.

Fertliser application, mulch application, ring weeding, slashing, brushing, Mucuna weeding, Bunch harvesting, loading are some of the main activities on the farm. Farm life was full of experience dealing with people who think alternatively. The work on the farm is very important for the Economy and ensuring food security in the Country. It dawned on me at the moment that my time on the farm was for a Greater Purpose of feeding an entire population and more.  Farm life started at 6:30am to 11:00 pm with a full working gear and water..lol
