Women have been known to play very important roles in Agriculture as their male counterparts. Current Environmental and Sustainabilty concerns complement linking female participation in agriculture with development and economics. Women in many parts of Ghana and beyond are increasing their contribution to household food security.
The proportion of women in agricultural production and postharvest activities ranges from 20 to 70% and are involved in various on farm and non-farm activities; from land preparation, planting, farm sanitationa dn maintenance through harvesting to post- harvest activities.
Despite their immense contribution to agriculture and food security, farm-women suffer a lot from working on their farms and when given other contracts.
With most farms in Ghana being less mechanised, women are involved intensely at every point of production. Produce gained is used to feed the family and the surplus sold to support family income.
Personal experience gained from the largest Oil Palm company in Ghana revealed how much women work and the meager income they acquire after executing such herculean tasks. This however does not deter most of the women from farming, knowing very much that it is all for the greater purpose.
To pay them back properly, It requires giving priority to women’s access to education, information, science and technology, and extension services to enable improving women’s access, ownership and control of economic and natural resources.
Women are to be recognised as being integral to sustainable development. Kudos to all women working their hearts out to feed the nation. God Bless you all
